a Introduction

Some of the major functions performed by the Design & Construction team within the Engineering Department are as follows:
  • Design and construction management related to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of existing roads, sewers and watermains
  • Surveying, AutoCad drafting, construction inspection for works done within the City's rights-of-way
  • Engineering records management, including the digitizing of paper records of the roadway, sewer and watermain infrastructure
  • Responding to public concerns and questions related to public services available within the City rights-of-way e.g. driveway entrances, sidewalks & curbs, sanitary, drainage and water servicing
  • Review and approval of work proposed within the City's rights-of-way by private utilities e.g. telephone, cable, gas, hydro
  • Municipal engineering advice to other City departments
  • Review and issue of excavation permits for all work done within the City's rights-of-way
  • The City's annual road reconstruction program - by far the largest component of work performed by this group

Investigations
  • Condition of sanitary and storm sewers using video cameras
  • Condition of sanitary and storm sewers servicing individual properties using "mini" camera and video system
  • Location of property lines to determine site visibility triangles at intersections and private vs public trees
  • GPS survey of City owned structures
  • Drainage studies in areas involving City owned properties
  • Traffic counts to determine traffic volumes and speeds
